Walk the dog at the Garden Route Dam

Enjoy the tranquil waters and cultivated forest surrounding the Garden Route Dam

At the foot of the Outeniqua mountains, we find the Garden Route Dam; many of the locals call it the George Dam.

This breathtaking setting is the ideal walk for the dog and cycling with the kids. It has plenty to offer; you can relax and unwind, take a long hike or push the limits on one of the mountain bike trails.

On any given Sunday, this tends to be a hub of activity for pooches, big and small.

There are two security points, so running alone feels safe (but always remain aware). It is also a beautiful spot to kayak and picnic. No motorized boats are allowed on the dam.

Tips: When you arrive, you will see the first security checkpoint; from here, it is a ~15-minute walk to the dam. You might want to skip this part if you don’t want a workout or have small children with you. Go through the security gate to the second parking area under a canopy of trees or near the dam.

Keep your dog on a leash. Many people walk their dogs at the dam, and you will likely pass a few of them.
