In Search of Elephants at the Red Elephant trail in Knysna

Searching for small and large wonders that will reconnect you to nature.

The Red Elephant trail in Knysna, South Africa, is a stunning and challenging hike that takes you through the town’s beautiful indigenous forests. With the recent excitement in the news of spotting a lonely Knysna elephant, this seemed like a fitting walk to explore.

The hike is approximately 7km long and takes around 2-4 hours to complete. The trail offers a mix of steep inclines and flat stretches, making it an excellent workout for experienced hikers.

One of the most unique features of the Red Elephant trail is the indigenous forest that it winds through. The forest is home to a variety of wildlife, including bushbuck, bushpig, and a number of bird species. Along the trail, you will also pass by several crystal-clear streams, making it a great spot to cool your feet on a hot day.

In terms of difficulty, the Red Elephant trail is considered challenging but young children will be able to complete the hike with only a little encouragement. Overall, the Red Elephant trail is a must-do for anyone visiting Knysna. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a unique and beautiful experience, the trail is sure to leave a lasting impression. Just remember to bring plenty of water, snacks, and a good pair of hiking shoes, as the trail can be tough in places.

The Red Elephant trail is one of three Elephant trails in the area.

We were lucky enough to end our walk on the same day as the Knysna triathlon, with an elderly man overtaking us after his 2.5km swim, 10km bike ride and 30km run.

Happy hiking!
