Walk with Monkeys at Monkeyland

Visit Monkeyland in Plettenberg Bay to see hundreds of free-roaming rescued monkeys in native forest.

Monkeyland near Plettenberg Bay offers something completely different. It’s not a zoo, and there are no cages – aside from a short period when newly arrived monkeys are being introduced to the sanctuary. It’s a patch of real forest where over 550 monkeys do their own thing.

Lemurs dash across paths, spider monkeys swing overhead, and cheeky capuchins eye your backpack with genuine interest. You’re led through the forest by a guide who’s full of great stories, and possibly some hard-won tips – like why it’s smart to keep shiny things zipped away, especially if its an iPhone 16 Pro Max ;).

The walk winds through tangled forest paths and over a long suspension bridge. No loudspeakers, no gimmicks – just monkeys being monkeys in a setting that gives them room to be wild again. Many were once pets, or used in shows, and now they live in proper groups where their personalities can come through. Some are bold, others hang back. Some clearly love the attention; others couldn’t care less. That’s what makes it fun – no two visits are the same.

Monkeyland also does things properly. No feeding. No touching. No monkey-in-your-lap photo ops. Instead, you get to see these creatures on their terms. Their energy is wild, curious, and often a bit comical – but always entertaining. Whether you’re coming to watch lemurs leap, hoping to get the kids closer to nature, or looking for a more scientific take on primate behavior, there’s something here for everyone.

At the end of the walk, there’s a small café and shop, and if you’re up for more, combo tickets give you access to Birds of Eden and Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary nearby.
