There is something magical about walking in the Knysna forests; it takes your mind to an enchanted world. You imagine how faeries and hobbits have been living unnoticed for hundreds of years.
Early mornings or late afternoons reveal most of the forest’s surprises and fresh leafy aromas.
Dogs love the smells and sounds of the forests (keep big dogs on a leash), while young kids love to pick up pinecones, explore bugs and mess around in muddy puddles. Adults can enjoy some tender-loving care for their minds as they breathe in the beautiful landscape.
The easiest way to walk in the Simola Plantation is to drive up Ou Kaapse Weg until you go past the Simola Golf Estate on your left – turn right and follow Gouna road for about 10 minutes. On the dirt road, you will see a few places you can stop along the way.
There is little to no mobile reception so make sure you tell friends or family before you leave if you are nervous about going off the grid.
Some of the names you can try and find in the area are:
• Terblans Nature Walk
• Rondebossie Hut
• McFarlane’s Island
