If you’re even slightly curious about birds, a walk through the Birds of Eden free-flight sanctuary near The Crags might ruffle your feathers—in the best possible way. With over 3,500 birds and around 220 species—both African and exotic—it’s less like a zoo and more like stepping into a forest where the birds are in charge. You’ll see flashes of colour, hear unfamiliar calls, and maybe even get a close look at a Knysna Loerie showing off its signature red wings.
It’s kind of incredible that there’s a giant mesh dome big enough to hold a forest—and that it somehow feels more natural than any zoo or aviary.
You’ll see parrots like the rare African Grey and showy macaws, ibises and flamingos. If you’re lucky, you might spot a Blue Crane—plus hornbills, waterfowl, and many more. And local royalty like the Knysna Loerie might swoop in for a personal encounter.
A forest walk, but with wings
You move at your own pace along the walkways that lead you behind a photo-worthy waterfall or across a hanging bridge. You might even have to lean sideways as a pink cockatiel swoops in to say hello. Occasionally, the canopy opens just enough to remind you how vast the space is.
No bookings are needed, and it’s open all year, making it an easy stop along the Garden Route. Monkeyland is right next door—no extra driving or parking—and combo tickets for both are discounted.
Birds of Eden gives you something different—an hour or two in a forest where birds do what they like and you just get to watch. It’s not loud, not rushed, and the sort of experience that stays with you, even after you’ve left the forest behind.
