MOEMA’S, Parktown North

Once upon a time there was a little boy named Niven. He loved his grandma very much, but because he could not pronounce the word “Ouma”, he called her “Moema”. Years later her other granddaughter, Danielle Postma, opened a delicous bakery in Parktown North and called it Moema’s. And if this little fairy tale isn’t sweet enough for you, wait til you see and taste their wares.

We’re talking yummy, sweet, gooey, drizzled, decadent and too-gorgeous-to-eat! When you look around you at Moema’s it’s like you’ve somehow landed in Willie Wonka’s Chocolate Factory and you can have whatever you want. OK so their cake menu and the words “bikini-ready” don’t exactly go together, but it’s an indulgence that just cannot be missed. (Does “Chocolate Obsession Cake” sound like something you can miss? We didn’t think so either.) The usual crowd at Moema’s is a mixture of the Jozi’s who’s-who, the hip and the chic – a polished bunch who all have one thing in common: their near-obsession with delicious cake and an appreciation for the finer things in life. Moemas is all about delight, splendour, value and all the things that are important to the family behind it. It’s about good people, creative combinations, fresh food, cakes and pastries.

Their prices are a little on the high side, but every mouthful is worth it. All the food is lovingly prepared on the premises with fresh, seasonal produce, using only the best quality ingredients and the result is that every plate is a vision of perfection that even Marie Antoinette would approve of. It’s also worth mentioning that that cater for vegetarians.

This is the perfect place to swing by and get a few delicious goodies for your picnic basket before heading to Zoo Lake to soak up the Highveld sun. Moemas can also provide delicious eats for small dinner parties and office functions. These dishes include wild mushroom and thyme tart with goat’s cheese, chive and chilli and lemon, pistachio and polenta cupcakes with orangeblossom icing and other unique combinations. Moema’s can also send out staff to help you set up, or you can do it all yourself and shamelessly accept all the compliments to the chef. We won’t tell!
