Storms River Mouth Rest Camp (Tsitsikamma)

Explore Storms River Camp, a perfect spot for nature lovers

The Storms River Mouth Rest Camp, also known as the Tsitsikamma campsite by many locals, is a great destination for nature lovers and adventurers. The campsite serves as a gateway to South Africa’s natural wonders, offering a variety of activities.

Discover Scenic Trails

Start your Tsitsikamma getaway with a relaxing stroll through the forest to the suspension bridge. This relatively easy walk is perfect for a relaxed day out, immersing you in nature’s soothing sights, smells and sounds. The bridges offer breathtaking views of the river below and lead to a pebble beach, making it an excellent spot for photography and reflection. If you want to avoid the onslaught of local and international tourists, then walking to the bridge late in the afternoon is a good option. Depending on your pace, the walk would probably take 1-2 hours.

For the adventurous, Tsitsikamma offers diverse hiking trails, including the moderately challenging Waterfall Tsitsikamma hike. This hike, marking the beginning of the famous Otter Trail, takes you past the Guano Cave and through lush forests. It concludes at a stunning waterfall that cascades directly into the ocean, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim. This journey not only offers a glimpse into the wild beauty of Tsitsikamma but also highlights the region’s varied landscapes.

Unwind with Comfortable Accommodations and Ample Amenities

Beyond the waterfall hike, Tsitsikamma is a treasure trove of outdoor activities. Whether it’s adventure kayaking, looking out for dolphins and whales, exploring the rich birdlife, or simply taking in the exquisite natural landscapes.

Other accommodation options at the campsite include forest huts and wooden lodges, which are known for their cosy atmosphere and offer a modest but comfortable retreat. These options are popular among international tourists and may be considered pricey to some locals, they provide a unique way to experience the beauty of Tsitsikamma up close.

The campsite itself boasts various well-maintained facilities, including a restaurant, snack shop, gift shop, a large swimming pool on the shoreline, and top-quality braai areas. However, during peak seasons, the bathrooms and showers can get very crowded, affecting their cleanliness which requires regular mopping of the floors. It’s also busier during these times, with caravans often receiving preference for sea views. Tent campers might find themselves without a direct view of the sea during these busy periods. Despite these drawbacks, the campsite remains a favourite for those looking to enjoy the natural beauty of the Tsitsikamma region.

Storms River Mouth Rest Camp remains a jewel in the crown of the Garden Route. Its unique blend of serene landscapes and thrilling outdoor activities makes it an ideal destination for families and groups seeking an unforgettable South African adventure. Whether you’re there for the hikes, the wildlife, or the landscape, Tsitsikamma promises memories to last a lifetime.
