At first you’ll run from the mic, but by the end of the evening you’ll be fighting over it – this we promise you!

Who says just because you’re turning 34 (or there abouts), you can’t act like an idiot? And there’s no better way to act this way, than living out your alter ego. In our case, we decided to release that inner rock star and throw a Karaoke partyyyy!

Ok, so this is what you’ll need. A Karaoke system, a good set of speakers, 2 or more mics, a decent-sized TV screen, a good selection of tracks, some rock star clothes, friends that lack inhibitions and lastly – alcohol – lot’s of it.

If you have the moola, you can rent a fully fletched system for between R1 500 to R3 000. But this can be overkill. An affordable way to do this (if you have a PS game console or the likes) is to buy SingStar and the DVD’s, or you can download the tracks. For an extra element, you can also rock SingStar Dance. This is a laugh, especially when you get your macho male mates to do a Beyonce number. You’ll really want to make sure you can accommodate at least 2 mics, because unless you’re fuelled with copious amounts of booze, you probably won’t have the courage to go solo on round 1.

At first, you tend to shy away from the limelight…but by the end of the night, you’re yelping ‘My turn! My Turn!’, and elbowing your best friend in the eye to get the mic. The funniest thing about Karaoke though, is that when you’re singing, it sounds like you’re doing a great job, until you leave the room and you’re able to hear the singing independently of the music…cringe…

We ended the night with a group rendition of Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’…possibly the most widely sung karaoke song in history. We had SO much fun…not quite sure how much fun it must have been for the neighbours though…
