ZOO LAKE SWIMMING POOL, Parkwood
Get your cozzi, my cuzzie! It’s time to return to an old-school boredom (and heat) buster: the public swimming pool.
When you grow up in the smaller burbs like Bez Valley, where postage stamp-sized homes could only dream about backyards big enough to house a pond, let alone, a pool – you’ll remember that there was only one place to go on sweltering summer days: the public pool.
Aah, the smell of chlorine, the taste of warm hotdogs in white paper packets, soft-serve ice creams with flakes and black Wilson’s toffees and then race back home… tripping over your slops and choking on fireballs to avoid the 3pm thunderstorms…takes you back, doesn’t it?
There is still no cheaper or better day spent than a day at the pool, especially if you now have little people of your own. One of toodoo’s favourites is the Zoo Lake Swimming Pool. 5 Bucks gets you in, from 10am to 17:45, 7 days a week! Pack a picnic basket, some reading material, a Frisbee, couple of towels to lie on, and most of all, sunblock, hat and an umbrella (trees are in short supply here).
Whilst some pass the time doing laps as if they’re training for the Olympics, the toodoo girls opt for more grownup activities like loudly playing ‘Marco Polo’, giggling about the boys and practicing handstands in the pool! Yay!
Going to public pools feels somewhat like a time warp back to our schooldays in the 80’s… (did we say 80’s? We meant 90’s, of course…) and there’s something quite comforting and retro-cool about that. You’ll still get wet patches on the car seat. The cloakrooms still look exactly the way they did 25 years ago. Thankfully though, there are fewer Speedos in sight nowadays…phew!
So if you can’t go to some fancy-schmancy seaside resort this year, you may as well take a trip down memory lane and save a bundle by being cool by the pool. Oh, and unlike at snooty resorts and hotels, public pools actually encourage ‘Dive Bombs’. They’re practically mandatory!
